Tips to help transition to Brown’s Best Pet Food

There are a few ways to introduce your pup to raw. Always allow the food to sit out for 15 to 20 minutes to let it get to room temperature. You can also pop it under the broiler on foil or an oven safe dish for a couple of minutes.

Microwaving is NOT recommended. You don’t want to kill off beneficial enzymes and bacteria (yes, some bacteria strains are healthy). The microwave also alters the food on a molecular level of the food making it less healthy.

To step up the flavor even more, you can drizzle a little olive oil, coconut oil or butter over their food, as well as stir in low or no salt bone broth. You can even add warm water to heighten the aroma of the meat.

Method 1

Just go “cold turkey” and switch. Most dogs dive right in and love Brown’s Best!

Method 2

Some pups are so accustomed to eating dead food, they may be hesitant or seem like they’re not interested.

Use an encouraging, positive tone and tell them just how good it is for them will go a long way! Try giving them a taste by hand. If they still seem “stand-offish” just leave them alone. Most dogs will give it a go in their own time. This may continue for a few feedings, but in no time, they’ll be hook!

Method 3

You can gradually transition between the old food and Brown’s Best by introducing a little Brown’s Best Raw into your pup’s bowl and gradually increasing the ratio of raw over several days.  You can pour a little olive oil or coconut oil over their food, as well as low or no salt bone broth.

Usually once a dog starts on Brown’s Best they love it and are very happy with their new healthy diet. You and your dog will appreciate the improvements in your pup’s shiny coat, clear skin, fresher breath and general well-being, not to mention fewer vet bills over the years.

Additional Tips

  • Go slowly and be patient. Younger pets or those on a healthy diet will transition more easily than older pets who may need a longer, more gradual schedule.
  • Use one flavor to start to reduce digestive issues. Once your pet is accustomed to raw, you may introduce our other medleys.
  • Limit treats during the transition period to encourage high nutrient feeding.
  • Offer clean, filtered water throughout the process.
  • If you have a picky eater, you may try fasting your dog the night before the transition.
  • During the transition period, you may notice changes in your pet’s stool. They may experience some diarrhea or (rarely) vomiting, due to a detoxification effect, especially if they have been eating processed dry or canned food for some time. Dry skin, runny eyes, and increased shedding may also be present during this time and are normal reactions as your pet’s health improves and toxins are removed from the body.
  • It is perfectly normal if your pet is no longer interested in their current food during the transition and only wants the raw food — you can go cold turkey and only feed raw from that point on.

These suggestions for transitioning and feeding are a simple guideline, not an exact amount of how much raw food your adult dog will need per day. Every dog is different.

You never have to worry about ordering too much, as Brown’s Best Raw is delivered fresh frozen and will stay fresh in your freezer for 6 months or longer.
